They were often called cuige meaning fifth in irish. Only four provinces are recognised as Meath merged into Leinster after the 12th century Norman invasion. Ireland is divided into four provinces and 32 counties.
The provinces no longer serve administrative or political purposes, but now function as historical and cultural entities.
