Clonmacnoise is located on the banks of the river Shannon. It is the burial place to many high Kings of Ireland. It is the resting place of Rory O Connor, the last high king of Ireland. St Ciaran founded his monastery here in 544AD. Clonmacnoise fell into decline in the 13th century . Originally it consisted of 7 churches and 2 towers, hence it was known as the seven churches.
